Chapter 14

‘Are we in agreement?’ Aidan asked.

The six children – Aidan, Aoife, Billy, Tina, Sara and John – were sitting on the bank of the river under the small stone bridge that gave ‘Droichead Beag’ its name. The main road that went right through the centre of the village ran over the bridge. The river walk underneath with its beautiful flowers and carefully tended pathways, was an oasis of calm. Today it was the scene for the children’s meeting about ‘the plan’.

They had been thinking about the plan ever since the start of March, following on from what Tommy had done to Aidan at the Senior match in Gorman. The plan had been devised by Aidan mainly, with key input from all six children. John was worried about it and Sara, with her calm nature, thought it was all a bit intense. Aidan, Aoife, Billy and surprisingly Tina were all for it. Tina, with her practical, organised nature, felt that Gorman were so seriously in the wrong here, that payback was needed. She also had a lot of respect for a meticulous and well-engineered plan.

‘You know I don’t like conflict,’ Sara shrugged. ‘But I do agree that something has to happen after what Tommy did to Aoife, and then to Aidan.’

‘I just think that this will drive Tommy wild,’ John said nervously as he shuffled from side to side. ‘Who knows what he will come up with next?’

‘This will end it,’ Billy said firmly. ‘Tommy will know not to mess with us anymore.’

‘I hope you’re right, Billy.’ John responded, still unsure, but reluctantly going along with the plan.

The ‘plan’ was to take place at the first under-12 club match of the season, which was between Droichead Beag and Gorman. Always a grudge match, Mr Power and Ms Kelly just wanted to get this game over with, without incident, and move on with the rest of the league. Ms Kelly was hoping to use the opportunity to talk to Gorman coach, Annie Doyle, after the game and appeal to her reasonable side.

Half an hour before throw-in, the Gorman players started arriving at Droichead Beag GAA grounds. One by one, they headed toward the ‘visitor’ changing rooms; John and Sara were standing guard at the door.

‘You all have to leave your boots outside here,’ Sara directed. ‘The club has just painted the floor in the changing rooms, and they don’t want it getting marked or grass stuck to it.’

John pointed to the ‘home’ changing rooms adjacent to where they were standing and at the row of the Droichead team’s boots lined up outside it, as proof of what they were saying.

‘We have to do it as well,’ he added.

‘Is it ok to walk on, will it destroy my socks with your horrible gold colour?’ Ellie asked suspiciously.

‘No, it’s totally dry,’ Sara explained matter-of-factly.

‘Folks, you have to leave the boots outside,’ Mr Power called over as he headed out to check the pitch. ‘We’re all doing it for the first few weeks. You
